Fall 2007

  • Ross Kaneko of CH2M Hill was selected to be in the ninth class of Pacific Century Fellows, a program modeled after the White House Fellows Program to identify, encourage and develop future Island leaders. The program was founded by former White House Fellow Mayor Mufi Hannemann.

  • Barry Muranaka, formerly with Akinaka and Associates, is now with M & E Pacific.

  • Aqua Engineers and U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii (USAG-HI) were awarded a 2007 Global Ecomagination Leadership award from GE Water & Process Technologies for the Schofield Barrracks Wastewater Treatment Plant.

  • Daryl Hiromoto, Assistant Chief of Field Operations, was one of two Honolulu Board of Water Supply (HBWS) employees named Employees of The Year. Daryl was part of the 1998 and 1999 pipe tapping team that won the pipe tapping contest at the Annual Conference and Exposition held in Dallas and Chicago.

  • Ron Wada, Assistant Chief of Data Processing, was selected to represent the Honolulu Board of Water Supply in the Manager of the Year category for the City and County of Honolulu.

  • Kevin and Pam Baughman are recovering from a motorcycle accident involving their Harley Davidson and a truck on Sand Island Access Road. The couple spent a couple of weeks in Queens Medical Center, and are now back at home on their boat recuperating. (Their motorcycle has been turned to scrap.) They expect to be back at work in a couple of months.


Fall 2006

  • Dean Nakano started on February 1 with the Honolulu Board of Water Supply as Deputy Manager. He previously served as Acting Deputy Director for the Commission on Water Resource Management.

  • Ken K. Hayashida was named 2007 Hawaii Engineer of the Year by the Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies. He serves as the president and principal engineer of the structural and forensic engineering firm of KAI Hawaii,
    Inc., which he founded in 1995.


Summer 2006

Moving On

  • Donna Kiyosaki, deputy manager at Honolulu BWS has taken a position with Waimana Enterprises.

  • Rae Loui left the Department of Education and is now with M & E Pacific.

  • Robin Hirano left The Limtiaco Consulting Group and after a stint with the Federal Government, is now working for CH2M Hill.

Retiring

  • Takao Fujimoto retired from the Honolulu BWS as of July 31.

Graduates

  • Elson Gushiken’s daughter, Traci Gushiken, graduated in May of this year from the University of Southern California and is headed for New York in August to pursue her Masters degree.

  • Kanoelehua Arakawa, Jeffrey T. Pearson’s stepdaughter, graduated this June from Seattle University’’s School of Nursing. She will begin her career at Maui Memorial Hospital on Maui.

  • Mike Fuke, Donna Kiyosaki, Brooks Yuen, Keith Shida, Tommy Yoshino (all Honolulu BWS employees), Rich Hopkins (Hopkins Technical Products, Inc.), and Ann Zane (State Department of Health).

New Arrivals

  • Congratulations to former Conference Trustee Dawn Barsana, who gave birth on June 4th to a boy, Kainalu Emil Aiden Barsana-Szewczyk, who weighed in at 5 pounds, 13 ounces and was 19 inches long.

Spring 2005

Announcements

  • Congratulations to Takao Fujimoto and Lorene Fukuhara, both employees of the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, on their January nuptials.

New Arrivals

  • Anna Tanaka, the copper person on the Women’s Pipetapping Team and employee of Honolulu Board of Water Supply, was delighted by the arrival of her granddaughter, Kitana, in November 2004.

Resignations

  • Scotty Anderson has resigned from Ferguson Enterprises and the AWWA Hawaii Section Board of Trustees to pursue another career. He will be missed.
Retirements
  • Floyd Nakamura, Raymond Iwamasa, and Ruth Kajiwara have all recently retired from the Honolulu Board of Water Supply.

  • Dennis Lee recently retired from the Hawaii Department of Water.


Summer 2004

New Arrivals

  • A special congratulations to Ross and Ada Kaneko for the birth of their son, Austin Jace Kaneko on May 29, 2004. Austin weighed in at 5 lbs. 14 oz. and measured 18 inches.

  • Also to Marc Chun, a Civil Engineer at Honolulu Board of Water Supply and his wife, Barbie, for the birth of their baby girl, Camryn, May 22, 2004. She weighed 6 lbs. and measured 19 inches.

  • Paul Kemp recently married... Best wishes to Paul and his new wife Lina.

Summer 2003

Congratulations

  • David Haddock was promoted to Water Treatment Plant Operator II at Maui Department of Water Supply.

  • Past-chair, John Stubbart, moved to Denver Colorado where he is working for AWWA’s Small Systems Area.

  • Past-chair, Paul Kemp, is working for the Guam Water Works Authority.

  • Pipefitter Daniel “Gundi” Dancil was chosen as Maui Interscholastic League Girls Soccer Coach of the Year for 2003.

  • Condolences to DWS Secretary Michele Sakuma, whose brother, Stacey Tom, passed away on July 23, 2003.
    New Arrivals

  • Trustee Keith Okamoto, Hawaii Department of Water, and his wife, Leigh, had a baby boy,Tristan Jet Toshi Okamoto, May 14, 2003.

  • Past-chair, Ernst Lau, adopted a baby girl named Julianne Le Ping Lau.

  • Kevin Ihu of Honolulu Board of Water Supply, had a baby girl, Haley, on June 25, 2003.

  • John Katahira, with The Limtiaco Consulting Group, and wife Lori had a baby girl, Erin, on February 11, 2003.

  • Congratulations to DWS Molokai Supervisor John “Longie” Dudoit who welcomed his first grandson on November 19, 2002. Grandson Laiku Jonah Paleka, lives in Hilo with Longie’s daughter and her husband.

  • Congratulations to DWS Engineer, Herb Chang and his wife, Maria, on the birth of their son, Nicholas G. S. Isotov-Chang, on April 13, 2003. Nicholas weighed 8 1/4 lbs. and measured 20 inches at birth.

  • Department of Water Supply, County of Maui Engineering Program Manager, Alva Nakamura’s first granddaughter, Jennifer Akemi Noelani Kimura, was born on July 3, 2003 weighing 6 lbs., 15 1/2 oz.

  • Gary Ishikawa, BWS Operating Unit Leader for Operations, was named Deputy Adjutant General in Governor Lingle's cabinet.

  • Ernest Lau, former manager for Kauai Department of Water, named Deputy Director of Department of Land and Natural Resources in Governor Lingle's cabinet.

  • Jeffrey Pearson, formerly with Brown & Caldwell, is now Deputy Director of Maui Board of Water Supply.

  • Kevin Ihu, BWS Employee and AWWA member, married Shauna Asato on February 1.

  • AWWA member and DWS engineer Herb Chang, married Maria Isotov of Maui County Department of Planning on February 8.

  • George Tengan was sworn in as the 14th Director of the Maui Department of Water Supply on February 13.

  • Edward Tschupp, Deputy Manager of the Kauai Department of Water for the past 5 years, has now been appointed its Manager and Chief Engineer.

New Arrivals

  • Wendy Taomoto, an engineer at Maui Department of Water Supply gave birth to a baby girl on October 19, 2002. Kendall Setsuko Taomoto weighed 8 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 20 inches in length.

  • DWS Water Resources Planner Eva Blumenstein, gave birth to a girl, Sophia Grace Blumenstein on December 7, 2002. Sophia weighed 7 pounds 4 ounces and measured 20 inches in length.
