Past-Chair Woodie Muirhead has one workshop that will highlight various topics related to distribution systems. including pipe selection, failure analysis, and excavation safety. Included are topics on membrane technologies, carbon adsorption and UV disinfection. For those that work in plant operations and deal with water treatment issues, this workshop will present timely information. This workshop has been tentatively approved for 0.725 CEUs by the Board of Certification of Public Water System Operators and Board of Certification of Operating Personnel in Wastewater Treatment Plants (subject to full Board approvals in May) The Conference will officially open on Wednesday, May 19th with exhibitors' showing the newest and latest starting at 8 am. Section Chair Daryl Hiromoto will present opening remarks at 9 am. AWWA Vice-President Debra Kaye will provide us with the current AWWA updates. The always wild and exciting Pipe Tapping championship round will start at 10 am. At lunch, the City and County of Honolulu's Mayor Mufi Hannemann will be the featured speaker. Technical sessions will start Wednesday afternoon covering a variety of exciting topics, including the challenges for small water systems, the latest in water meters, tips for managing projects, and even the challenges the upcoming Rail project faces with utility systems. At the end of the day, the exhibitors will host the "Meet & Greet” to give all of us a chance to meet with old friends and new acquaintances. Our gracious host will be the chair of our Exhibits Committee, Rich Hopkins. One of the highlights for Thursday will be the 4th Annual Top Ops contest featuring the best of the state water system operators. This is always an exciting event that goes down to the wire. At lunch, we will present the annual awards hosted by the irrepressible Garret Matsunami. More technical sessions on Thursday afternoon include a round table discussion for Small Water Systems, the Wonders of Trenchless Excavation, and the use of Video Equipment with SCADA systems. This year, we're trying something new in place of the Installation Banquet. We're going to start the formal part of the program at 4:30 pm and follow it with an evening of heavy pupus instead of the usual sit-down dinner. We hope that will give everyone another opportunity to meet with colleagues and friends. On Friday, we will have presentations from USGS, DOH, UH, and DLNR. We will conclude the conference with the annual golf tournament at Hawaii Kai golf course, put together by our tournament chair, Jeff Pearson. We look forward to seeing all of you at the Conference. Aloha, C. Michael Street
