AWWA Hawaii Section Young Professionals Committee
Makiki Stream Cleanup Community Service Project
August 27, 2005

On Saturday August 27, in record 92 degree heat, volunteers with the Young Professionals committee joined the Makiki Stream Stewards, Washington Intermediate School, and the Boys and Girls Club to help clean Makiki Stream. They proved that clean water professionals really can get down and dirty as they jumped into Makiki Stream gathering rubbish and removing invasive seaweed and weeds. In 2 hours, the combined efforts of 85 volunteers were able to accomplish:

TOTAL TRASH REMOVED: 100 bags, 20 palm fronds, 2 shopping carts
TOTAL STENCILED STORM DRAINS: 14
TOTAL GRAFFITTI REMOVAL SITES: 2 bus stops
TOTAL DOOR HANGERS: 100

Many thanks to the following volunteers:
Lianna Chang and friend, The Limtiaco Consulting Group – Committee Chair
John Katahira and family, The Limtiaco Consulting Group
Bryce Yoshimori, Fukunaga and Associates
Gavin Masaki, Gray Hong Nojima & Associates
Matt Sekiya, Austin Tsutsumi and Associates
Susan Uyesugi – BWS, AWWA Director (Susan, those sandwiches were ono!)

AWWA Hawaii Section Young Professionals Committee
Storm Drain Stenciling Community Service Project
Moanalua Area
July 30, 2005

Several members of the Young Professionals and Diversity Committee helped out with a City and County of Honolulu Department of Environmental Services storm drain stenciling project in the Moanalua area. Along with volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, teams were made up of 4 members consisting of: 1) traffic control (person with safety vest), 2) sweeper, 3) scrubber, and 4) painter.

WORK PROCEDURE:
1) locate the storm drain to be stenciled (picking up litter along the way)
2) sweep the area to be stenciled to remove large particles
3) scrub the area with a metal brush to dislodge stubborn grime
4) sweep the area again to clear any loose particles
5) lay down the stencil and spray paint

Fortunately for us, the weather was slightly cloudy so we didn’t get burnt to a crisp. In an attempt to multitask, we picked up trash on our way to each storm drain as well as explained our mission to onlookers. Popular items picked up included soda bottles, plastic bags, and fast food containers (bags, cups, and French fry containers).

The Moanalua area (particularly Likini St.) is considered by the City as one of the heaviest littered areas. As we know, with the help of wind and rain, litter finds its way to the storm drains and eventually out into the ocean or in this case, Salt Lake. I’d like to think we did a little to help the community! You can click here to download a City ENV summary of the event in PDF format.
