AWWA Hawaii Section Young Professionals Mixer
Meritage Restaurant, Honolulu
April 28, 2004
The first ever Young Professionals Mixer was held on April 28, 2004 at the Meritage Restaurant. The event was the brainchild of Diversity and Young Professionals Committee Chair Jason Kage with the intent to promote AWWA and the 2004 Hawaii Section AWWA 30th Annual Conference to young professionals. As the Hawaii Section AWWA membership grows older, it is vital to increase the involvement of young professionals to ensure longevity of the organization. The average age of the national AWWA membership is approximately 50 years old, and the goal of the Diversity and Young Professionals Committee is to enhance the diversity of the Hawaii Section with an infusion of young professional AWWA members and to integrate these younger members into the fabric of the Hawaii Section and promote their involvement.
Young professionals are usually considered to be under 35 years old, however due to the demographics of the Hawaii Section membership and to include Ross Kaneko, the AWWA Hawaii Section young professional is currently anyone under 40 years old. The Young Professionals Mixer attracted approximately 40 young members and prospective members. The event started at 5:30 pm and young professionals lined up and signed in at the reception table headed by Diane Kodama, Teri Watanabe, Holly Takara, and Carolyn Sawai. Special thanks to them for all their hard work.
The night began with announcements and greetings by Master of Ceremonies Garret Matsunami and promotional speeches by celebrity young professionals Incoming Chair Paul Scott and Chair Donna Kiyosaki. Special thanks to Paul and Donna for their support and encouragement of this inaugural event. Everyone enjoyed the heavy pupus, drinks, ice-breaker game, numerous cash and gift prizes, and AWWA paraphernalia table put together by Dawn Barsana. Special thanks to Susan Uyesugi, who was another celebrity young professional in attendance, and Eddie Doi for their support and prizes donated.
The attendees reaped the benefits of networking and building relationships with their colleagues in the private and public sectors as well as University of Hawaii students. The event ended at 7:30 pm, however, most in attendance stayed much later since everyone was having such a good time.
The large turnout and success of the event was the culmination of two months of planning and hard work by Jason Kage, Dawn Barsana, Garret Matsunami, and Diane Kodama. They were the keys to the success of this event and special thanks to them for all their hard work and effort. The preparation for this event included meetings with ASCE Young Members Forum, presentations to the ASCE Student Chapter, and event coordination meetings. The promotion of AWWA during the planning stage and at the mixer has already resulted in additional memberships and Annual conference registrations.
The Committee is discussing upcoming young professional events including social events, professional development and technical seminars, community service, facility tours, and construction site visits. The Committee relies solely on volunteers and needs all the help it can get in planning and carrying out these future events. I encourage all young professionals to get more involved with AWWA and take advantage of all the benefits this organization has to offer. If you or anyone you know would like to get involved please contact Jason Kage or Jon Muraoka. The event was a great success and thanks again to everyone for all their hard work, effort, and support.
