Highlights of May 2nd (Fri), 2008
Top Ops, General Membership Meeting, Water for People Golf & USS Missouri Field Trip
Pacific Beach Hotel, Waikiki and Pearl Harbor

The last day of the conference feature the 2nd Annual Top Ops competition, the General Membership Meeting, Water For People Golf Fundraiser and a field trip to the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor.

The Top Ops competition, chaired by Earl Ichimura, involved a "College Bowl" type of competition which tests the everyday know-how of water treatment operators, with questions approved by the Association of Boards of Certification (ABC). The purpose of the competition is to recognize and promote excellence and professionalism in all aspects of water operations by giving operators the opportunity to showcase their talents. Teams of one, two, or three water operators compete against each other in a competitive, fast paced, question-and-answer tournament. The team with the most points is declared the Top Ops Champion. Here are the results of this year’s contest:

lst place - combined team from Wood Valley Water & Farm Coop. and Hawaiian Beaches Water Co. (Big Island)
Team Members: Jeff Silva, Kate Prescott and Mark Prescott

2nd place - West Kuiaha Meadows (Maui)
Team Member: Zack Wheatley

3rd place - Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay
Team Members: Tom Murin, Robert Pagliai

After the Top Ops contest, the general membership meeting of the AWWA Hawaii Section was held. The meeting was the first meeting to be chaired by incoming Section Chair Woodie Muirhead. Participants then spent the afternoon either golfing at Pearl Country Club as a fundraiser for Water for People, or attending a field trip to Pearl Harbor to tour the battleship USS Missouri.

13th ANNUAL WATER FOR PEOPLE GOLF TOURNAMENT

A total of 79 participants turned out for the Water for People golf fundraiser at Pearl Country Club. Good fun was had by all attendees. Everyone received some kind of prize, making for all involved to be winners. Donations this year to Water for People were in excess of $4,000 for the first time. This money helps to cover transportation and other costs associated for work on Palau. Thanks to all of those that participated and also to those companies that donated cash and prizes for the golfers. We hope to have more golfers and better prizes next year.
