Highlights of May 11 (Th), 2006

The 32nd Annual Hawaii Section AWWA Conference continued on Thursday, May 11, with a morning general session, the popular pipe tapping contest, an awards luncheon, nine concurrent afternoon sessions, and the traditional banquet.

In the ever-popular and exciting annual pipe tapping contest, all teams had to make a live tap into a 6-inch ductile iron main under pressure, connect two 6-foot pieces of copper pipe, one to the main and the other to a hose bib. Each team has two attempts and the best time counts. Penalties are added for leaks and safety violations. This year, there was an unprecedented number of broken tapping bits which resulted in several teams being unable to complete their runs. Congratulations to the Hawaii County Department of Water Supply Men's team, who finished first with a best time of 1:45.44, while the Honolulu Board of Water Supply Women's team finished first with a best time of 1:50.97.

The Men's Champion team members include coach Leonard Midallia, Roy Miyasaki, Norris Gonsalves, and Theodore Lindsey. The Women's Champion team members are Carolyn Sawai, Danielle Ornellas, Anna Tanaka, and coach Gary Fernandez. This is the same women's team who won the association competition last year. During the awards luncheon, two AWWA Hawaii Section Scholarships were awarded. The recipients were Jaime Yoshino, daughter of Honolulu Board of Water Supply employee Thomas Yoshino, and Trenton Zane, son of Hawaii State Department of Health employee Ann Zane. The outstanding Section Member Award went to Dawn Barsana, AWWA Hawaii Section Conference Trustee and Chair, for her invaluable contributions to the organization. A Special Recognition Award was presented to Lianna Chang, AWWA Hawaii Section Young Professionals Co-Chair, for her enthusiastic efforts as committee chair.
