Highlights of May 14 (Friday), 2004

The 30th Hawaii Section AWWA annual conference ended on Friday, May 14, 2004 with technical sessions in accord this year's conference theme, "New Ways, New Water", the Hawaii Section annual meeting at the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki, a field trip and a golf tournament.

Three presentations were made starting at 8:00 am. Paul Kemp spoke on Restoration of Guam Waterworks Authority as a Utility. Westley Chun's presentation was on a Low Cost, Closed Loop Water System for "House of the Sun" Visitor Center at Haleakala National Park, Hawaii. He described the project and objectives and showed how wastewater is treated and recycled for toilet and urinal flushing. Dr. Roger Babcock then presented the Honolulu Membrane Bioreactor Pilot Study Update - Performance Evaluation. The research study was on the latest five different technologies on wastewater treatment and is ongoing at the Honouliuli Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Incoming Section Chair Paul "Scotty" Scott, conducted the Hawaii Section AWWA general membership meeting. Scotty is looking for a big push on activities for young professionals, more efforts on Water for People activities, events geared for utility operators, and getting manufacturers more involved. The new Section officers were then introduced. Conference Co-Chair Audrey Yokota gave brief closing remarks. Katie McCain and husband Mike thanked the Hawaii Section Board for support and guidance and remarked "Hope everybody enjoyed the conference". She then invited all to the 31st Annual Conference next year. The meeting was adjourned at 10:20 am.

A field trip offering a behind-the-scenes look at the Hawaiian Water Adventures Park filtration system and a Water for People Golf Tournament 2004 Fundraiser at Mililani Golf Course followed in the afternoon.
