Highlights of May 13 (Thursday), 2004
The 30th Annual Hawaii Section AWWA conference continued on May 13 with a general session, the pipe tapping contest, an awards lunch, nine concurrent sessions, and ended with a banquet.
Donna Kiyosaki chair of the Hawaii Section, was moderator for the morning general session. Douglas K. Murata, Honolulu Board of Water Supply, and Scott Blumeyer, gave a presentation on "Fresh Water Sustainability and Deep Wells and Sistrict Cooling." Their presentation included discussions on saving of resources, economics, and energy. Steve Parabicoli of the Limtiaco Consulting Group then spoke about selected innovative non-traditional uses of recycled water in Hawaii.
The Honolulu BWS Men's team finished first and Champion again in the annual Pipe Tapping Contest with a best time of 1:18.60, while the Honolulu BWS Women's team also finished first again with a best time of 1:51.87. In comparison, last year's times were 1:26.18 for the Men's team and 2:07.53 for the Women's team. The teams had to make a live tap into a 6-inch ductile iron main under pressure, connect two 6-foot pieces of copper pipe, one to the main and the other to a hose bibb. Two runs are made and the best time counts. Penalties are added for leaks and safety violations.
The Men's Champion team members are Everett Arquero, Aaron Asato, Andrew Freitas, and coach John Barrientos. The Women's Champion team members are Carolyn Sawai, Danielle Ornellas, Anna Tanaka, and coach Gary Fernandez.

During the awards luncheon, two $1,500 scholarship recipients were recognized. First was Christina Tom, who was represented by parents Alexander Leong and Tina Tom. Christina will be receiving her degree in nursing from the John Hopkins School of Nursing next week and plans to continue for her master's degree. The other recipient was Dustin Moises, a student member of AWWA. Dustin is senior in civil engineering at University of Hawaii Manoa campus. Outstanding Section Member plaques went to Audrey Yokota and Gary Fernandez. Bob Chuck, AWWA Past President, pinch-hitted as master of ceremonies for the luncheon and introduced Kathryn McCain, AWWA President-elect, who was the luncheon guest speaker. McCain gave an update on the AWWA Annual Conference and Exposition. She also commended the Hawaii Section for 111 new members, a 17% increase. She also complimented the Hawaii Section for diversity and great participation by younger members. She talked about advocacy and priorities next year, to help consumer know the values of water. She also wanted the manufacturers and service providers to be more involved and understand we need their support. She also asked for support for Water for People.
After the afternoon sessions, the day ended with the conference banquet. The weather was fine and sunset scenery was excellent for the open air banquet on the same deck where the pipe tapping contest was held in the morning. Woodie Muirhead served as the banquet master of ceremonies. AWWA President-elect Kathryn McCain was presented a gift from the Hawaii Section. She then installed the new section officers: Chair Paul "Scotty" Scott, Vice Chair Walter L. Hager, Secretary Jo-Ann N. Taniguchi, Treasurer Susan S. Uyesugi, Director Raymond N. Matasci, BWS Trustee Kathryn Matayoshi, Water Utility Trustee Keith Okamoto, Consultant Trustee Jon Muraoka, Manufacturer/ Supplier Trustee Scotty Anderson, Government Trustee Ernest Lau, At-Large Trustee (Conference) Dawn Barsana, At-Large Trustee (Administrative and Policy Council) Elson Gushiken, and Immediate Past Chair Donna Fay K. Kiyosaki. An award was presented to Section Membership Chair Eddie Doi for outstanding membership gain. Past Fuller awardees were announced and those present were called up and recognized. In a suspenseful statement, the New Fuller awardee for 2004 was recognized: The new recipient is Raymond N. Matasci. The program was short and attendees had a chance to renew acquaintances and make new friends and enjoy a filling buffet meal and refreshments.
