Highlights of May 12 (Wednesday), 2004

The 30th Annual Conference of Hawaii Section American Water Works Association opened at the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel on Wednesday, May 12, 2004. The conference was called to order by Audrey Yokota, conference co-chair. Donna Kiyosaki, section chair, welcomed the attendees and said to use the time to renew friendships and dedication to the water community.

James "Duke" R. Aiona, Jr., Lt Governor, State of Hawaii delivered the keynote address. He commended AWWA to sustain the quality of water in the United States and the Water for People Campaign. He cited the Honolulu Board of Water Supply's slogan, "Water, Man's Greatest Need."

The morning General Session opened with a presentation on conservation. Bill Chvala, Jr, and Kate McMordie Stoughton, research engineers from the Pacific Northwest Laboratory in Washington, showed conservation means by various projects.

Rodney Villanueva was master of ceremonies for the 20th "Ono" Water Contest. Water this year came from private developments and resorts. Celebrity judges included Kathy Muneno, KITV Channel 4; Britt Riedl, KGMB Channel 9; Sharie Shima, KHNL Channel 8; Kathryn McCain, AWWA President-elect; and Mike McCain, Kathryn's spouse. The "ono" water was judged on three criteria: taste (pleasing/refreshing), appearance (clarity), and odor (lack of).

The results of the contest were as follows:
1st place - Kapalua, Maui
2nd place - Princeville, Kauai
3rd place - Kauai Gay & Robinson

The luncheon speaker was Paul Brewbaker, Chief Economist, Bank of Hawaii. He showed various financial charts on income, employment, and home prices. A total of nine presentations were given through three concurrent breakout technical sessions in the afternoon. The day ended with the traditional meet and greet The first day ended with the traditional meet and greet social event in the exhibits area with refreshments and door prizes. This activity provided the 32 exhibitors the opportunity to showcase their products and services and to renew acquaintances in the organization.
