DAY 2 (THURSDAY, MAY 15) RECAP

The 29th Annual Conference of the Hawaii Section American Waterworks Association continued for the 2nd day at the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel. The morning general session had presentations on desalination approaches for the island of Oahu and the Kalaeloa Desalination Demonstration Facility. The manufacturer's exhibits were open from 8 to noon.

PIPE TAPPING CONTEST

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) Men, 2002 Men's Champions, retained the men's first place title this year. Team members are Everett Arquero, Glenn Ah Yat, Aaron Asato, and Andrew Freitas. The Honolulu BWS Women, 2002 Women's Champions, also retained the women's first place title this year. Team members include coach Gary Fernandez, Carolyn Sawai, Danielle Ornellas, and Anna Tanaka. The results were as follows:

AWARD LUNCHEON

The awards luncheon recognized several individuals for different achievements. Scholarship awardees included Brian Zane, son of Ann (State Department of Health) and Jeff Zane, and Eric Fujikawa, son of Greg (Kauai Department of Water) and Chrystal Fujikawa. A Special Recognition Award went to Chris Douville of Brown and Caldwell for his efforts on the Section workshops. Outstanding Section Member Awards were presented to Woodie Muirhead of Brown and Caldwell for his efforts on coordinating the annual conference, and to Jo-Ann Taniguchi for her continuous efforts to support the Hawaii AWWA in the capacity of Section Secretary.

BANQUET

The 2nd day ended with a banquet where the retiring 2002 - 2003 section officers were discharged and incoming 2003 - 2004 officers installed. Tom Arizumi of the Hawaii State Department of Health, Safe Drinking Water Branch, was recognized as one of only 10 individuals that are selected annually as an AWWA Honorary Member. Tom is only the fifth individual from the Hawaii Section to attain this honor. Mel Waki, Head of the Environmental Engineering Department of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Pacific Division, was announced as the section's Fuller Awardee for 2002-2003.
