29th AWWA HAWAII SECTION CONFERENCE OPENS
The 29th Annual Conference of the American Waterworks Association Hawaii Section opened at the Renaissance Ilikai Hotel on Wednesday, May 14, 2003. Ron Schwarzwalder, Immediate Past President of AWWA gave the keynote address. Ray Riordan of the East Bay Municipal Utility District then gave a presentation about the Bay Area Security Information Collaborative (BASIC) during the morning general session.
Ono Water Contest: The U.S. Navy PWC - Waiawa Shaft took first place in the Ono Water Contest. Coming in second place was the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Polihale State Park in Kauai, while the U.S. Army Schofield Shaft and Punahou School were tied for third place. Other entrants included DLNR (Ho'olehua, Molokai), National Parks (Volcano, Hawaii and Haleakala, Maui), and Kamehameha Schools. The "ono" water was judged on three criteria: taste (pleasing/refreshing), appearance (clarity), and odor (lack of).
Judges were Ron Schwarzwalder, Jill Taptich, City of Columbus, Ohio, Marcelino K. Actouka, General Manager, Pohnpei Utilities Corporation; Theresa Takiue, Drinking Water Branch, Department of Health, Hilo representative, and Guy Hagi, KGMB Channel 9. Rodney Villanueva was the MC for the contest.
The luncheon speaker featured Herman Frazier, University of Hawaii Athletic Director, who spoke on the goals of the UH athletic program. A total of nine presentations were given through three concurrent sessions in the afternoon. The first day ended with the traditional meet and greet social event in the exhibits area with refreshments and door prizes.
